SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is a cost-effective IP telephone service option

MF Telecom Services can explain the advantages of and differences between Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), VoIP and a traditional ISDN line to choose the most cost-effective, and recommend the best solution for your business.

SIP can offer a quick turn-around, scalability, cost savings and various business disaster recovery options.

What is SIP?

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a solution between a traditional private branch exchange (PBX) and a fully VoIP system. It is a cost-effective IP telephony option, replacing your ISDN lines and routing calls through the internet, while still maintaining a telephone system on-site. SIP trunks provide the connection between the PBX and the public telephone network (PSTN).

As well as voice calls, SIP can be used for video conferencing, instant messaging, media distribution and other applications.

What are the benefits of SIP?

  • Cost-effective – line rental cheaper per channel than traditional lines
  • Flexible and scalable – easy to add/remove users, incorporate home workers and support your business growth
  • Business continuity – diverts calls quickly
  • Keep existing number – move office and keep your existing number to avoid losing business
  • Quality assured – using a high speed broadband connection
  • Future proof – ISDN lines are being switched off in 2025

VoIP is available for computers, smartphones and other devices

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a phone service delivered over the internet, instead of via a public switch telephone network (PSTN). It unifies all your systems and can link multiple sites using a router, sending the call out over a data line.

VoIP is suitable for business with a data line which has a resilient data connection with at least 100k upload speed per user/call. Installing VoIP phones on Low Grade Broadband connections will cause Packet loss and dropped calls.
